Ukkadam wall collapse: 2 engineers suspended

Coimbatore
Two engineers were suspended by CCMC commisioner P Kumaravel Pandian for their alleged negligence over the construction of the retaining wall around Ukkadam Periyakulam.

The suspended officials Assistant Engineer Kalyana Sundharam and Assistant Adminstrative Engineer Umadevi were the field staff during the construction of the wall. It is to be recalled that on April 14, a retainig wall measuring 75ft in length and 15 ft in height collapsed during rain.

Following the incident, the CCMC drew criticism from the public and political parties on the quality of construction as the wall was reportedly constructed only six months ago under the Smart City Missions. Due to widespread criticism over the work, a team from Anna University was deputed by the CCMC to investigate the issue technically.

Sources said that the report filed by the team revealed that the retaining wall had a sub-standard quality of constuction.
