Wild elephants are abundant in the forests surrounding Valparai in Coimbatore district. Forest officials were on patrol yesterday in the Kavarkal forest area.
They then inspected a place after it stunk and found the corpse of a dead male elephant. This was followed by an inspection by the Additional Chief Forest Officer of the Forest Department and the Deputy Director of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
They found traces of two elephants fighting over the spot where the elephant had died. There were also ivory stab wounds on the body of the dead elephant. The deceased animal was identified as a 45-year-old male elephant. The body of the dead elephant was autopsied by a veterinarian.
The corpse of the elephant was then placed in the forest to be eaten by other wildlife.
