In a surprise development, Perundurai AIADMK MLA Thoppu ND Venkatachalam filed his nomination paper as independent against the AIADMK candidate Jayakumar with the returning officer M Ilahijohn at the Perundurai Taluk office on Thursday, following which he was expelled from the party.
The AIADMK leadership did not give him a chance to contest in the constituency again though he won from it in 2011 and 2016 polls.
After consulting his supporters, he decided to contest as independent for the 3rd time in succession.
He led a rally of his supporters from his office to taluk office and filed nomination. Later, he told reporters.
”It is heartbreaking that those who worked in the AIADMK were not given a chance to him to contest again though he was working for the welfare of people only for the past 10 years.
Those who have benefited from me may not think of me.
But people think about my service and appreciate my work.
I have created and improved basic infrastructure in the segment for the past 10 years.
Due to my effort alone, Perundurai IRT medical college has been upgraded as Government medical college and MRI, dialysis units, mega oxygen plant to help thousands of people when corona was at its peak level.
When my son’s marriage was solemnised during that period, he did not invite many according to the government norms.
Howeve, he sent dress and other gifts to the houses of over 25000 cadres, including those in many SC colonies.
By this way he treated all in the party as my family members.
The drinking water problem in the constituency has been resolved and I enforced many welfare schemes.
Above all, I got Rs 240 cr Kodiveri dam drinking water project.
Whoever comes to power, I will try my best to complete the project and ensure drinking water to all.
Similarly, I will try my best to complete the ongoing Athikadavu-Avinasi water project, which was also my dream project for the past many years.
I have been an example of how an MLA to function.
So, I have secured public support and decided to contest independently”, he said and appealed to public to elect him to carry out more development schemes in the segment.
