Perundurai independent candidate Thoppu Venkatachalam, MLA, staged dharna in a booth at Sakkaraigoundanpalayam in Ponmudi Panchayat on Tuesday on the charge of that the EVMs were not kept in order as per the approved norms while polling taking place.
The AIADMK MLA was contesting as independent following denial of party ticket in Coconut Grove symbol.
He cast his vote in his Thoppupalayam village and visited various booths including
Sakkaraigoundanpalayam village and found relocation of 2 voting machines.
Following this he went to the polling officer and complained that his chances of success were thus likely to be affected. He also demanded that the voting machines be properly lined up.
The polling official replied, “We have replaced the machines for technical convenience. Your logo will not go unnoticed by voters in any way.”
But Thoppu, who refused to accept it, sat on the ground in front of the entrance gate of the polling booth and staged a protest, saying he would not leave until the voting machines were lined up.
Then, Karthikeyan, Assistant Electoral Officer, Perundurai constituency, Deputy Superintendent of Police Selvaraj and Inspector Thangam rushed to the spot.
They then held talks with him. The voting machines were then lined up as per the norm. After that, Thoppu withdrew the stir. Due to this, the voting was stopped for about 50 minutes.
