Smart City works are underway in Coimbatore worth several crores. Through this work, all the ponds have been renovated and have been decorated with coloured lights, sidewalks and playgrounds for children have also been set up.
The main attractions of Coimbatore like RS Puram and Race Course are also being refurbished and decorated with coloured lights. Although the work is beautiful to look at, various social activists have said that it is endangered for its natural beauty.
Especially in the RaceCourse area, several trees have been cut down for the ongoing refurbishment works. This was condemned by the social activists and the public. In this situation, more than 50 people wearing black shirts marched in the racecourse area to protest against the Smart City work.
In support of them, Mahendran of the Makkal Needhi Maiam and Mayura Jayakumar of the Congress Party also participated in the march. They said that nature is being harmed in the name of smart city and thus causing air pollution and causing damage to the bird shelters as well.
