Seed testing is the science of evaluating the planting value or the quality of the seed. It determines the standards of a seed lot viz., physical purity, moisture, germination and ODV and thereby enabling the farming community to get quality seeds. Seeds of good quality also improves the benefits of the other agriculture inputs like fertilizer, pesticide etc.
According to Agriculture Officer, Seed Testing Lab, Veerabadra Street, Sathy Road, Erode, a seed which is having maximum possible physical purity, germinability and optimum moisture is termed as quality seed. This decides the crop stand in the field. Uniform germination of seeds in the field is important in reducing the extra work of replanting. In order to ensure the uniform germination of the seed material used need the seed quality testing.
The germination rate of a particular seed lot is the key indicator as to how that seed will perform in the field. Seed moisture is one of the most important factors influencing seed viability and quality during storage.
Sample size for seed testing at laboratory:
Rice-400gm, Pulses and Sorghum-150gm,
Maize and Groundnut-500gm,Gingelly-25gm
Greens-50gm,Onion, Tomato, Brinjal Chilli-10gm,Pumpkin, Gourds,Bhendhi-150gm
The lab is available for testing the seed quality parameters such as physical purity, germination percentage, moisture and other distinguishable variety at the lowest cost of Rs.30 per sample. A farmer or seed seller or seed producer those who wants to test their seed can register for testing through a website called SPECS (Seed Production, Enforcement and Certification System) and can approach the lab with the duly signed website generated receipt copy.
