Ryots association functionaries staged a sit-in stir at the PWD office, Vendipalayam, Erode, in protest against the officials apathy in giving the proposed Lowerbhavani Project (LBP) canal modernization project report as assured by revenue officials.
Around 2.7 lakh acres of land in Erode, Karur and Tiruppur districts are being irrigated through the LBP canal, which is 200 km from the Bhavani Sagar Dam. A sum of Rs.709 crore has been allocated for modernization of the canal.
This is supported by a section of farmers, while another section of ryots staged stir against the project. Last week, a section of farmers staged a protest in Arachalur against the project. The farmers were subsequently summoned to the Erode RDO office for talks.
There the tripartite talks were led by RDO Saibuddin and it was announced that no work would take place until May 5.
Order was issued to provide project report to the farmers regarding further works. The farmers then went to the Public Works Department office to ask for a project report.
But the authorities are said to have delayed and showed apathy in giving the project report. Outraged farmers today staged a sit-in protest at the office today with more than 10 farmers’ union executives sitting abruptly in the office premises.
Thus a tense situation prevailed there. PWD Executive Engineer Arul held talks with them to settle the issue.
