When the Congress party formed its government in Madhya Pradesh in December 2018, all the people were under the expectation that Jotiraditya Scindia would be sworn in as the chief minister of the state. Scindia’s influence and campaign played a major role in dislodging the BJP which was well entrenched in power in Madhya Pradesh for 15 years.
But the bearing of the election expenditure by the 73-year old Kamal Nath was the main reason for Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to make him as the chief minister. Another reason for making Kamal Nath as the chief minister was that he could mobilize the entire funds needed for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
After the results of the assembly elections were out difference of opinion widened between Kamal Nath and Scindia ever since the former was sworn in as chief minister. The announcements like waiver of agriculture loan and the permanency of part time teachers which were included in the Congress party’s election manifesto for the assembly election as suggested by Scindia were ignored by Kamal Nath after he formed the government. He thought that Scindia’s influence will grow by leaps and bounds if these announcements were implemented.
The issue gained prominence when the announcements for the Rajya Sabha elections were made. Kamal Nath proposed the name of former chief minister Dig Vijay Singh for the RS member seat instead of Scindia. When the Congress high command also accepted his recommendations, Scinida and his supporters decided to quit Congress.
The BJP announced Scindia as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. This is the trouble invited by the Congress high command on its own. If Kamal Nath had agreed for a head counting to prove his majority, without waiting for court’s judgment, he could have saved his prestige according to political watchers.
