Residents of Choolai, Erode, appealed to Erode Corporation to remove the water hyacinth that occupied the Ganiravutharkulam (tank) in the area.
For the past few years, many NGOs and political parties staged many stirs to remove encroachments and renovate the sprawling 15 acre tank.
Subsequently, corporation took steps to renovate the tank at a cost of nearly Rs 6 cr, granted by environment department.
The tank was desilted and a sewerage line was constructed to prevent the mixing of sewage in it. A walkway was built around the pond.
By the time these works are completed most of the tank is overgrown with water hyacinth. Therefore, the people of the area have demanded complete removal of hyacinth that are harmful to the environment.
