Rajendran has been teaching Silambam in Vellankoil village near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district. His students won in the state-level meet that took place in Namakkal last February.
Subsequently, nine of his students were qualified for the national level tournament. But the students did not have enough money to go to Goa, where the national-level tournament was organised. Though the villagers helped them out, they still ran short of money.
Actor and Director K Baghayaraj, who is a native of that village, raised a fund of Rs 30,000 and everything put together, helped the students participate in the tournament. As a result, they were able to represent the state in the Seventh National Youth Federation Cup- Rural Games 2021 and won 6 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals.
Though the whole village felt proud of their victory, the students and the coach demanded that there is no adequate attention for traditional games like Silambam. They request that the government must extend support for such sports so that rural youth would be benefitted.
