The Election Commission has imposed strict restrictions on private hotels to prevent money laundering and violation of the model code of conduct ahead of the elections Some hotel rooms in Coimbatore are said to have been pre-booked before the election date was announced.
These details are being examined by the Election Commission. The Electoral division has sent out an instructional notice to the private hotels and wedding halls in Coimbatore city and suburbs. It was said in the notice, “The name and address of the daily occupants of the hotels should be verified. It has to be compulsorily cross-checked whether the rooms are booked for the same person or on behalf of the parties.
If rooms are booked for more days on behalf of a person or party then those details should be communicated to the Electoral Division. The activities of placing cash items in hotels and offering them to voters should not be allowed.
Party cadres should not be allowed to stay in the wedding hall or ceremony halls. Hotels must operate in accordance with the rules of electoral conduct. Outsiders should not be allowed to stay in hotels within the Assembly constituencies in the Coimbatore district on or before the polling day”. It was also advised not to engage in activities that would affect the polling.
