Federation of Tamil Nadu Power Loom Associations appealed to the government to give permission to start the production of free dhothi and sarees to be distributed to poor during Pongal festival.
In its petition, the federation said across Tamil Nadu, 209 Powerloom Primary Weavers’ Co-operative Societies are existed.
The Government of Tamil Nadu will provide yarn and orders to the Societies to start production from the second week of June or the first week of July every year.
This year, many members of the societies across Tamil Nadu are struggling to find employment without starting production. They are unable to recover from the curfew.
The government has not paid the 25 per cent wage arrears.for the school uniforms manufactured from last Jan. to March. So many societies were not able to pay wages to its members.
Therefore, the Chief Minister should intervene and start the process of production of free cloth in order to provide employment to the weavers of the power loom co-operative societies.
Besides, the outstanding amount should be given to the societies to protect the weavers livelihood.
