Federation of TN Agriculturists Associations state president lawyer C Nallasamy welcomed formation of separate ministry for water resources by the newly assumed government.
He said that in the cabinet headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin, a separate ministry for irrigation has been set up to meet the water needs of Tamil Nadu and declared as ‘Water Resources’.
The department has announced that it will work to make water available to farmers and maintain water levels.
Tamil Nadu is water deficit state.
Nevertheless, our farmers and people depend on the available rain water for drinking water, irrigation, industrial purposes. etc.
Therefore, it is essential to use available water sparingly and maintain water levels.
The basic source of agriculture is water.
Therefore, it is a long standing demand of the farmers of TN that separate ministry for water sources be created on the line of our neighbouring states-Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
We welcome the fulfillment of this demand by the DMK in the new Cabinet of Ministers.
Similarly, the Department of Agriculture has been renamed as ‘Agriculture, Farmers Welfare Department’.
In the vision of safeguarding the interests of the peasantry, such naming is to be welcomed.
If the schemes are properly implemented, various problems of the farmers will be solved, he said.
