Erode Iniyan bagged Silver in the 1st World University Online Blitz Chess Championship in which 960 student players from 84 countries took part.
The league part of the event was held on 14.03.2021 with 2 players from each of the 4 groups qualifying to the finals of the event held on 18.03.2021 in round-robin (all play all) format.
Grand Master Iniyan.P, a BBA student of PSG college, Coimbatore, participated in the event representing Bharathiar University. Iniyan played in the ‘A’ group of the event in which he scored 8.5 points from 10 games including wins against American Grand Master (GM), Ukrainian GM, Bulgarian
Fide Master (FM) and Polish WFM and draw against Croatian International Master (IM). By this result he got the 1st place in his group and qualified to the final stages of the event.
The final stage of the event was a formidable 8 player all-play-all event with 2 Russian GM’s, 2 Armenian GM’s, a Chinese GM, Georgian IM and Indonesian IM. Iniyan was the only Indian to have qualified for this final stage.
After a bad start, a loss in round 1 to Chinese GM Xu Yinglun, he put on a great streak, scoring 5.5 points in the last 6 games including wins against Russian GM’s Antipov Mikhail and Oparin Grigory, Armenian GM Hovhannes Gabuzyan, Georgian IM Irakli Beradze and draw with the Co-winner, Armenian GM Haik Martirosyan.
With this result, Iniyan has tied for 1st place and got Silver medal in the tie-breaks. A great moment for Indian GM Iniyan, PSG college, Coimbatore and Bharathiar University.
