The weekly shandy trade in the Gani Textile Market at Erode, one among a largest one in the state, was badly hit due to non arrival of traders from other districts and states to buy clothes due to the fear of spreading of corona.
The weekly textile market, which starts at 8pm on Mondays, is usually held until Tuesday afternoon.
It is customary for wholesalers not only from the other districts but also from neighboring states including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka to visit the market during shandy days.
Traders in the textile market have severely affected due to model code of conduct restricting people to carry above Rs 50000 without documents.
The Textile Market Merchants’ Association said: Due to the corona panic, the whole business has been severely affected as no traders have come from other districts and states.
Retail trade is also much less due to low arrival of public. So, the trade was fully hit affecting their livelihood much, they worried.
