Congress Minorities wing district president J Suresh, vice president KN Basha and general secretary MM Harshad submitted a petition to Erode East Congress MLA Thirumagan Evara pleading to construct an arch in memory of Silver Jubilee Celebration of Independence at the entrance of Erode Central Bus Stand.
They said that in memory of such celebration, the then Erode municipal council led by Congress leader Rajappa adopted a resolution on August 11, 1972 to name the name of the bus stand as Silver Jubilee Independence Day Bus Stand and the government also accepted it and a name board was kept in that regard.
Significantly, Erode municipality alone kept such a board in the state and chose such a title to take part in the celebration at that time.
After the municipality was upgraded into Municipal Corporation by late CM M Karunanidhi on January 1, 2008, some development works were done in the bus stand and the board was removed.
Then, Basha wrote many letters to the CMs, Local Administration MInisters, Collectors, Mayors and Corporation officials to keep the board again.
Then, an arch with the name was built at the exit point of the bus stand at a cost of Rs 6.80 lakh and declared open on September 22, 2013. As per the norm, the arch should be existed at the entry point of buses in Mettur road.
After nearly, 40 years gap, a Congress MLA was elected from Erode now.
So, to add more glory to the silver jubilee celebration and to the town, the birth place of your grand father and freedom fighter Periyar EVR, another arch with the title be built at the entrance of the bus stand by using his MLA fund or obtaining special fund from the government, they demanded.
It would help remind the ancient history of the nation to our posterity, they hoped.
