Coimbatore, a livable city

The people of the Kongu belt are extremely happy and proud that Coimbatore has been included in the Ease of Living Index released by the Government of India, which lists out the most livable cities.

Coimbatore is already a city of elegance.

The inclusion of Smart City infrastructures is adding up to the beauty of the city.  


Based on 15 parameters including administration, health and hygiene, security, economy, drinking water and drainage facilities, the voting for this index was conducted in 2020. 32.2 lakh people have given their responses in the survey that was conducted from January 16 to March 20, 2020, across the country.

Based on these 15 parameters, an expert committee framed the index.
Accordingly, the cities were divided into two broad categories such as cities above 10 lakh population and those below 10 lakh population.

The former category included 49 cities while the latter included 62 cities.

It is to be noted that Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka tops the list.

It is followed by Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Surat, Navi Mumbai, Coimbatore, Vadodara, Indore and Greater Mumbai in the subsequent ranks.


In the list of cities with a population of more than 10 lakh people, Delhi ranks 13th and Srinagar comes last.

In the list of cities with a population of lesser than 10 lakhs, Shimla is in the first place. Bhubaneshwar, Silvassa, Kakinada, Salem, Vellore, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Davanagere and Trichy are in the subsequent ranks.

Out of these 62 cities, Muzaffarnagar is in the last position.Apart from this, the list of best Municipal Performance Index was also released.


In the category of corporations with less than 10 lakh population, the New Delhi Municipal Council has secured first place.

It was followed by Tirupathi, Gandhinagar, Kurnool, Salem, Tiruppur, Bilaspur, Udaipur, Jansi and Tirunelveli. At the same time, Indore holds first place in the list of corporations with more than 10 lakh population.

It is followed by Surat, Bhopal,  Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Raipur, Greater Mumbai and Visakhapatnam in the next few ranks.
