Chennai sailor wins gold in Spain Open

Nethra Kumanan from Chennai has won the gold medal in the Spain Open boat race held in Spain. Nethra Kumanan is studying Mechanical Engineering at SRM College, Vadapalani, Chennai.


The 23-year-old sailor competed in the Gran Canaria Championships in Spain and won the gold medal in the laser radial category, beating the Spanish athletes.


It is Europe’s regional level Open Championship. The tournament was attended by 20 players from 3 countries, including 3 players who qualified for the Olympics. The Sports Commission of India has congratulated gold medalist Nethra Kumanan.


Nethra has already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first Indian to qualify for the Olympics in sailing and the 10th Indian to do so overall.

When she qualified for the Olympics in the Asian division, she qualified by a larger margin than the athlete next to her.


She won bronze at the 2020 World Cup Boat Race in Miami, USA. She is currently staying in Spain and receiving training. It is noteworthy that her coach, Thomas Essex of Hungary, is a two-time Olympic competitor.
