Brisk polling seen in Erode district

Voters turn out was much good in morning hours in all 2,741 polling stations in Erode East, Erode West, Modakkurichi, Perundurai, Bhavani, Gobichettipalayam, Anthiyur and Bhavanisagar constituencies in the district where 128 candidates were in the fray. Around 13,160 government officials and teachers were on election duty.

In the morning hours long queue was seen in many booths where pandals and shamianas were erected to protect the voters from sweltering heat.

So, after 11 am the voters turn out came down in many booths due to summer heat. Many booths have drinking water facilities.

Also, lines are drawn at a distance of 100 meters and 200 meters from the place where the polling centers were located and police did not allow voters to congregate within that boundary.

Mock polling was held in the presence of polling agents in all booths at 5.30 am before the commencement of official polling time of 7 am.

All booths were sanitized and voters were given one glove before pressing EVM button as corona prevention measure. Face mask was insisted for all to enter the booths.

PPE dress were kept in booths to help corona afflicted persons to come and vote in the evening. The voters, police and officials were allowed to enter booths after thermal scanner test.

The voters were asked to maintain social distancing in all booths. Apart from local police, ex servicemen, home guards, NCC students, 8 battalions of CRPF were on bandobust duty.

Education Minster KA Sengottaiyan cast his vote in Kullampalayam school in his Gobi segment. Environment MInister KC Karupanan exercised his franchise at Velalampalayam school in Bavani segment.

MODEL BOOTH: Model polling stations, set up at 4 places in the Erode East Assembly constituency, raised voters interest much.

Barricades were erected so that voters can line up and vote once they enter. In addition, seating arrangements were made for the elderly people and wheelchairs for the disabled were arranged.

In each segment, 4 model booths were created, as per the order of the EC. Erode East Returning Officer and Corporation Commissioner Ilangovan said: Model Polling Centers were created at Corporation Schools at Idayankattuvalasu, Cauvery Road, Christujothi School in BP Agraharam and Government Girls’ High School in PS Park .

Collector C Kathiravan, who inspected the work of sending EVMs to various booths from Erode Taluk office on Monday, told newsmen only for a booth at Kathirimalai hill the EVMs were sent through headload workers due to non availability of donkeys.

Carrying the EVMs through 2 or 3 wheelers could damage the machines as there was no good road there. For other booths, the EVMs were sent through vehicles with heavy police bandobust, he added.

Informing that additional teams were formed to check note for vote trend, he said that 5 were held for giving cash to voters. An inquiry would be held with their candidate and on the basis of his reply alone action will be taken.
