Both PhD and NET compulsory for Asst Professor post

The University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new guidelines for the academic year 2021-2022 have made it mandatory that along with clearing the NET(National Eligibility Test), one has to complete a PhD to qualify for the post of Professors in colleges and Universities.

It has been announced that the new rule that was formulated in 2018 will be implemented this year. Earlier the rule was that those who apply for the post of Assistant Professors should have either completed a PhD or cleared the UGC- NET.

Weightage of 5 to 10 marks was awarded for those who were appointed as Assistant Professors after clearing NET. At the same time, if the candidate has cleared NET after completing a PhD, then the weightage given was 30 marks.

The UGC states that this procedure is in a way putting down the value of those who clear NET and hence the new rule was formulated in 2018 during the tenure of the then Union Minister Prakash Javadekar. And now, the rules are being implemented for this year.
