More than 300 Students participated in District-level Silambam Competition

More than 300 students from various educational institutions participated in the district- level silambam competition that took place at Karpagam academy of higher education in the city on Saturday. Winners of the competitions would be participating in the state-level competition. 

The competitions were conducted under different categories - mini sub-junior, sub-junior, junior and senior - and players were allowed to showcase any one of the 13 varieties of silambam including kambu vechu, alangara vehcu, vel kambu vehcu, man kombu vechu and ayudha jodi. 

While the championship under senior category was grabbed by Karpagam academy of higher education, championship under junior category was secured by international silambam aatasalai.

 
Under sub-junior category, Silambalaya players won 53 medals - 21 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze – and under mini sub-junior category, the Ilanthalir team won the championship.

The vice-chancellor of the university Venkatajalapathy kick-started the competition in front of the university registrar Palaniswami.

President of the Coimbatore district Silambam association Selvakumar presided over the competition, while university’s director of physical education Sudhakar welcomed the players.
