Accused escapes from police custody in Salem

A person accused of pick-pocketing from an AIADMK party functionary during a meeting of the Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy with party functionaries at the AIADMK office in Omalur on Saturday escaped from the police custody.


The accused who was identified as Israiyil 30, a native of Kurnool in Andhra was caught red handed when he tried to lift the purse from an AIADMK functionary Sekar of Omalur.

He was handed over by AIADMK men to Omalur station police.

The police took him for coronavirus test before producing him before the magistrate for remand.

Israiyil was kept in Omalur police station on Saturday night.

A police team headed by Special Sub-Inspector Alavagounder were posted on duty to keep vigil over the prison.


At about 5.00 am on Sunday, Israiyil wanted to urinate and the police who kept vigil brought him out of the police station.

Suddenly Israiyil manage to free himself from the clutches of the police and fled.

Although a tough chase was given, the police could not catch him.

A search has been launched intensively in the Salem New Bus Stand and at the Salem Railway junction.


The Superintendent of Police, Dr.DeepaGaniger has instituted an inquiry on the cops who were on duty when the accused gave a slip.
