Not only the high-speed rides of four-wheelers on the suburban roads of Chennai but also the adventures of youngsters like bike racing and wheeling are causing shock and fear among the people. Mostly young people between the ages of 18 and 25 are causing such incidents.
Despite the constant monitoring and appropriate action by the transport department and the police, such incidents remain uncontrollable.
The fact is that young people who engage in bike racing cannot be controlled as the maximum penalty is a fine for speeding.
Bike racing should be considered a serious traffic offence as it can endanger not only the life of the rider but also the life of fellow passengers on the road. Continuously indulging in these offences can be curtailed only if these acts are declared a punishable offence.
At the very least, the government should consider permanently confiscating the vehicles of those who engage in such racing on highways and permanently disabling their driving licenses.
