Collector Kathiravan ordered the public to wear face masks when leaving their homes as corona spreading was on the rise in neighbouring Kerala and Maharashtra recently.
He also warned that a fine of Rs 200 would be slapped for not wearing masks.
Accordingly, 80 persons who did not wear face shields were fined Rs. 200 per head in the Erode corporation area on the first of his instruction on Wednesday.
Authorities also conducted a surprise inspection in business houses to enforce the social distancing norms.
Four of the shops were found to have allowed people without following corona safety norms.
Subsequently, each shop was fined Rs 500 each.
The sops were told to ask its customers to wear masks.
Corporation Commissioner Dr Ilangovan said those who do not wear face masks should not be allowed inside the shop.
