Kovai youth selected for Centre’s premium Olympic training assistance

K Sathish Kumar, Final year B.Com student at Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science in the city is one among the 250 sportspersons in the country selected under the ‘Target Olympics Podium’ Scheme (TOPS) by the Government of India.

TOPS is a flagship program of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports which is an attempt to identify and provide assistance to India’s top athletes prepare and win Olympic medals in years 2020 and 2024.
Last year Sathish Kumar was among the two badminton players selected from the state and got his spot booked in the list of TOPS (Target Olympics Podium Scheme).

He has topped the national ranking in the singles category at the All India Junior Ranking Badminton Championship held in Bangalore last year which earned him a spot in the Indian team to World championship.

A member of the Coimbatore District Badminton Association the 20 year he is one of the top junior badminton players in the country and has several medals in various national and international competitions.
Sathish Kumar is also a swimmer and represented State level competitions in his early stages.

Later, inspired by his cousin Arun Kumar, a national level badminton player, Sathish decided to take badminton, as his career and began practising with dedication.

Starting his career under coach N.Venkatesh,he learnt the basics of the game for four years.

In the initial stages of his career, he failed several times in State and National level competitions which made him prepare stronger and practice tirelessly towards perfection.

“I am happy getting selected in the ‘Target Olympics Podium’ scheme and this would help to develop my skill further and I’m looking forward to the training. My ultimate aim is to take part in the upcoming Olympics at Paris in 2024 and win a medal for my country,” Sathish said.
